fire safety retrofitting during operationHigh school, Rheinbach

Architecture

the project

The 'Städtische Gymnasium' of the city of Rheinbach, built in 1975, no longer meets today's safety requirements in terms of fire protection. For this reason, the city of Rheinbach had a fire protection concept drawn up.

The fire protection concept is implemented structurally.

The aim is to upgrade hallways and stairwells in terms of fire technology, improve the formation of fire compartments and escape route signs, as well as structurally secure the second escape route.

In addition, safety lighting and smoke detectors with acoustic warnings and necessary fire protection doors are installed in hallways and stairwells. Existing corridor doors are upgraded in terms of fire protection and include provided with floor seals, door closers, locks and panic fittings. By installing new doors, modified smoke sections are created. Appropriate glazing prevents a possible fire 'over corner'. The escape route signposting is improved with self-illuminating pictograms to mark the 1st escape route and long-lasting afterglow pictograms to identify the 2nd escape route. A total of 3 steel external stairs are provided to secure the second escape route.
