conversion, extension and reconstructionSpecial needs school 'Thymianweg', Cologne
The "Thymianweg" special needs school, established in the 1960s, offers learning in multiprofessional teams. The school, which has about 150 students, is pursuing a new pedagogical concept in cooperation with the Carl Richard Montag Foundation and the Education Office of the City of Cologne. It provides for the joint education of disabled and non-disabled students, which goes hand in hand with an increase of up to 250 students. Unlike before, the school should also be available for extracurricular activities. The task is to create space for a special educational school center with an attractive, modern learning and living offer at the location Thymianweg.
The school, consisting of the class tracts, an assembly hall, an administrative wing and a gymnasium, will be comprehensively reconstructed, rebuilt and expanded with new space offers. In addition to other classrooms, in open, flexible design, et al a cafeteria, a new auditorium, arts and music classes and additional administrative offices. Due to the limited lot size, the extensions can only be realized by partial demolition and new construction. Since predominantly 'central functions' are to be rebuilt, as well as to create a new entrance area corresponding to the changed meaning, the former administration rooms and the auditorium will be replaced by a new building. The new auditorium is divided by mobile dividing walls into three separately usable function rooms. This will create additional, spatial resources and flexibility of use for the versatile inner and extracurricular offers.
The classrooms and the gymnasium will be rebuilt and redesigned in their interiors to the rough construction. In addition, the gymnasium will be given a new facade - in line with today's energy standards. A construction of damping glass elements takes over the function of a baffle wall. This optimally floods the hall with daylight. The entire technical building equipment is renewed. The construction and conversion measures ensure the accessibility of the school. During the entire construction period, parts of the school are used, the construction work is carried out continuously while the school is running.
